Seal – Kiss From A Rose Lyrics

Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya

There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
And you became the light on the dark side of me
Love remained a drug that’s the high and not the pill

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can’t be seen?

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya

There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby
To me, you’re like a growing addiction that I can’t deny
Won’t you tell me, is that healthy, baby?

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can’t be seen?

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

I’ve been kissed by a rose on the grey
I, I’ve been kissed by a rose on the grey
I’ve (And if I should fall, will it all go away?) been kissed by a rose on the grey
I, I’ve been kissed by a rose on the grey

There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain
To me you’re like a growing addiction that I can’t deny, yeah
Won’t you tell me, is that healthy, baby?

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can’t be seen?

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey
Yes, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya

Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

Explaining the origin of “Kiss From A Rose”, Seal told in 2015, “The song started off as an experiment. […] I was embarrassed by it so I wouldn’t play it for my producer, Trevor Horn. But I played it to a friend. So then, when I was recording my second album, Trevor kept asking me about this ‘rose’ song he’d heard about. My friend had told him about it. I finally played it to him on the second album, because he kept browbeating me into it.”

Upon its release in July of 1994, “Kiss From A Rose” was included on the soundtrack to the film “The NeverEnding Story III: Return To Fantasia”. It was also featured (and released as its second single) in the soundtrack to “Batman Forever” in 1995. The song was first meant to play during a love scene between Bruce Wayne and Dr. Chase Meridian but landed on the end credits. One of the song’s two music videos was directed by the film’s director, Joel Schumacher, and shows Seal performing the song beside the Bat-Signal. Schumacher’s video was nominated for “Best Musical Moment” at MTV Movie Award.

According to David Sancious who played keyboards on Seal’s “Human Being” tour, the arguable line “Kiss from a rose on a grey/grave” has actually “gray” in it. Sancious recalled, “It was a poetic thing, just a little taste of poetry that happened to sound like something else. We were having lunch somewhere one day and he explained it to me.”

In 1996, this song received three Grammy Awards: for “Record Of The Year”, “Song Of The Year” and “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance”.
